Karen has been painting and drawing most of her life, and has studied under various teachers in N.B. (Fredericton, N.B. Craft School), as well as in Halifax. She has always enjoyed expressing herself with line and colour and feels a sense of peace and joy when doing her art. She has experimented with different media and after years of doing water colours decided to change to acrylics. Many subjects are fun for her, including street scenes of the city, still life and interiors, and some landscapes. She loves colour and likes to try different themes and ideas out, such as abstractions of figurative subjects. A sense of connection with an interior life is seen in her painting of interior scenes which evoke comfort and contentment, as well as the cityscapes she does, and are an important part of the motivation to paint.
Karen has shown at “Swoon Fine Art” and “Art 1274 Hollis”. She has also shown at “The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Sales and Rental” (now the Teichert Gallery), and others. She took part in an international show in Uruguay, “Joaquin: In His Shoes”, a tribute to the Uruguayan artist Joaquin Torres-Garcia, with some other local artists. This show was attended by Canadian Embassy folk as well as many South American luminaries. It was exciting to be part of this effort (2010). Her works hang in many different places, including other parts of Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Uruguay, and Switzerland.
Karen has donated works to various charities as well, liking to support local ones in particular.
I have been painting for many years, and making art all my life. Did water colours for a number of years, before switching to acrylics.
I studied at the NB Craft School in Fredericton for a few years, doing the drawing classes, and took other courses with local artists there.
Have shown here at various galleries, including the Teichert at the AGNS (recent and ongoing), as well as taking part in a number of shows with other local artists.
Love doing it, and am happy when it connects with others.
Making art is very satisfying, and it is nice to brighten the world with colour!
