These little coastal birds have such a cuteness about them. They are hard to spot on the beach and are camouflaged as they hide amongst driftwood and sand dunes.
The Piping Plover is a tiny shoreline bird. It is sandy-coloured with a black band across its forehead and a black band around its neck. The Piping Plover feeds on insects, crustaceans and spiders found along the shore. They are a little hard to spot as they blend into their environment and hide in driftwood and tall grasses.
Wildlife Conservation groups play a big part in protecting the Piping Plover from loss of habitat. We can all help by reporting to the Wildlife Confederation any nests that we discover so they can place signage and enclosures to protect the birds. Do not allow dogs to run free on beaches where Piping Plovers dwell. Do not ride ATV's and dirt bikes in nesting areas as these vehicles destroy nests and crush birds.
