Chimney Swifts

Brass, wire wrapping, stones, sari silk

Years ago Bonnie witnessed the Swifts return to the chimney at the old factory at dusk; “It was an amazing phenomenon!”.

Chimney Swifts are very small birds with slender bodies and very long, narrow, curved wings.  Historically, chimney swifts nested in hollow, old trees. As humans cut down the trees, they moved their nesting sites into chimneys.

This was the case in Wolfville, NS; Chimney Swifts were discovered living in the chimney of an old factory. When the old factory had to be torn down, the chimney was left behind for the swifts. This was the creation of the Robie Tufts Nature Centre.

Fewer than 1000 individual birds live in the Maritime Provinces. The population in Nova Scotia is declining rapidly.
