The Lone Whale
North Atlantic Right Whale
Mixed media on canvas
Sharon is drawn to the North Atlantic Right Whale because of the gentle and loving personalities they have.
The North Atlantic Right Whale has a broad back with no dorsal fin, is dark in color and large; reaching up to 16 m in length. Some have a white belly or chin. The blow of water created when a Right Whale exhales is V-shaped and can reach heights of 7 m.
One of the biggest threats to Right Whale populations is entanglements; approximately 82% of Right Whales have been entangled in fishing gear at least once in their lives. Other threats include vessel strikes, declining reproductive rates (limited breeding population, limitations in food availability), acoustic disturbance from human-related activities and habitat degradation and reduction.
