Colleen’s son rarely asks to go to a movie and watches very little television. When he was 7 years old, he asked to go see an IMAX documentary on the monarch butterfly. He was enthralled, as was Colleen, and they’ve taken notice of this majestic insect ever since.
The monarch butterfly is a long distance migrator and depends on one kind of plant – milkweed. The Monarch has experienced a 90% decrease in numbers since the 1990’s but we can help increase the population by creating new habitats in our own backyard gardens. If milkweed is planted one year, by the following summer, it will be in bloom. We can also support agricultural practices, like organic farming, that help protect the milkweed habitat.
