St. Mary’s Basilica, Halifax

St. Mary’s Basilica was built in no small way as a celebration of hard earned religious freedom in Nova Scotia.  In 1784 King George III finally repealed the acts prohibiting Catholics from owning property or building churches, and Halifax’s Catholics proceeded to build a modest wooden church in Halifax that year.  But it took another generation to raise the first stone church. It was begun in 1820 and in the  1860s and 1870s St. Mary’s took on a more perpendicular look with the addition of the massive façade, boasting in fact the highest granite spire in North America at the time.  Pope Pius XII elevated St. Mary’s to Basilica status in 1950.
