St. Matthews Church, Halifax

St. Matthews was built in 1858 and can legitimately claim to being the oldest dissenting congregation in Canada, Scottish Presbyterians until becoming a member of the United Church of Canada in 1925. St. Matthew’s church harkens back to sober 18th century Congregationalist meeting houses, with its minimized ornamentation, pristine box pews, and three-sided gallery.  Architect Cyrus Thomas’ major concession to the sweeping popularity of gothic design came with the rose window above the pulpit, a copy of one in Chartres Cathedral.  Exposed as it was to the harbour, St. Matthew’s suffered from both the great wartime explosions.  The 1917 blast took out many windows, and the eruption of the Bedford Magazine in 1945 damaged the steeple.
