A Big, Happy Midwinter Shout-Out from the Gallery

A big, happy midwinter hello to all of our friends from us down at the gallery.

I think it’s time you met your blogger—the artist behind the pen.

My name is Cris Sonntag, and you may know my work when I say I’m the artist who paints The Kids. Curious what the internet has to say about what I do? Here’s how it describes artists like me who work in whimsy. (Wow—finally, my own genre.)

Whimsical art is playful, imaginative, and joyful. It often leans into fantastical elements such as bright colours, dreamlike scenes, loose lines, quirky characters, and occasionally unrealistic perspectives. It blends childlike wonder with visual storytelling to create enchanting narratives that spark the imagination. And best of all—my favourite line of all—it offers a delightful escape from reality.

Yes. An escape from reality. Something we could all use right now, don’t you think?

I like to believe my work fits snugly and comfortably into this description. I hope it brings you a sense of freedom, wonder, nostalgia (apparently still a questionable word in the halls of higher art study—sorry, NSCAD), and, last but not least, humour. Yes—art is allowed to offer humour, smiles, and laughter.

So come down to Art 1274 and meet The Kids. They’re hanging out at the gallery, just waiting to cheer you up.

See you there,
Cris
