There’s a particular energy to fall in Halifax — the light turns softer, the air becomes crisp, and the city’s edges settle into memory. For us at Art 1274 Hollis, autumn is a time to slow, to notice, and to welcome new perspectives.

Painting the Season of Change
For many artists, fall is an irresistible muse. The light lingers differently on the water, colours deepen into golds and rusts, and the familiar streets seem touched by quiet drama. In the studio, that translates into a season of reflection — of layering, adjusting, and finding harmony in contrast. Just as the landscape transforms, so too does our creative rhythm. Each brushstroke becomes a small act of observation, a way to hold on to the fleeting beauty around us.
Featured Artist: Denise Soper
This November, we are delighted to present Denise Soper as our featured artist in Big & Small: Familiar Scenes from Around Halifax. Her show opens October 30 and runs through December 2. Please join us at the opening reception on November 1, 3–5 pm, to meet Denise, enjoy light refreshments, and share in conversation.
Denise’s work often walks between the sweeping and the intimate — city vistas and quiet corners, bold forms and delicate detail — showing us how the “big” and “small” coexist in our everyday Halifax. Her paintings invite us to observe what we might otherwise overlook: the curve of a rooftop, the shadow cast by a tree, the glow from a window at dusk.
As the season shifts, we hope Big & Small will give you a fresh lens on familiar streets, and that your visit to the gallery becomes part of your own autumn ritual.
