The Scoop – September 2026: The Molten Coast

As the song goes… It's hot, hot, hot!!

August has had us in its sweltering grip like a Conga line dancing barefoot on a burning sidewalk, and coincidentally, the newest body of work to open early in the month of September is literally "Molten!"

Colleen Underwood - The Molten Coast invitation

Colleen Underwood: The Molten Coast

We're very excited to present Colleen Underwood's newest exhibit of Encaustic Paintings for the month of September. The show is aptly entitled "The Molten Coast," and for a good reason.

In Colleen's words:

The Molten Coast is my exploration of the coast being more than a place…it's a feeling. It is the sound of waves returning to the shore, the glow of evening light across the water, the warmth of sand beneath your feet, and the making of memories that linger long after the tide has ebbed.

Through encaustic painting, I layer oil pigment and melted beeswax to capture the ever-changing moods of the Maritime shoreline— its energy, stillness, colour and light.

Each painting is a memory, an impression, or a moment that caught my attention and stayed with me. The wax allows me to build depth and luminosity, creating surfaces that shift and reveal themselves slowly, much like the coast itself. I fuse each layer with a heat gun or blow torch, scrape back and allow texture and hidden colours to surface.

This collection is my invitation to pause, wander the shoreline with me, and perhaps find a memory of your own within the layers of wax and colour.

The show opens with a reception and meet the Artist on Wednesday evening, September 2nd, from 6 to 8 pm. The weather may be warm, but this work is extremely cool. So don't miss out!

Also on Display: Gillian Lazanik

We would also like to remind you to come see the beautiful work by our multi-medium artist Gillian Lazanik, our featured artist for the month of August. Her wonderful and much sought-after work is thought-provoking and a real treat for the senses.
