To Everything There Is a Season…

To Everything There Is a Season…

“A time to build up, a time to break down, a time to reap, and a time to sow…”

Turning Inward with the Harvest

And so it is that fall—and the gathering in—begins. I find myself turning inward right around now, with harvest upon us here in the country. This is the season I feel most alive and inspired.

It’s the time for pickling, making jams and jellies, and dehydrating my overabundance of tomatoes and herbs. Right now, my kitchen is a potpourri of sweet and spicy as the country-girl side of me is in full swing.

The Sweet Expectation of Autumn

To me, there is such a sweet expectation to life in autumn. For those of us living in the country, it comes from knowing that life will soon slow down.

Nature shifts her palette from soft layers of green into sharp shadows and brilliant, in-your-face reds, golds, and rusts—all set against that ever-so-deep cobalt-blue sky.

The scent of fall nights is different, too. The earth is pungent with fallen leaves and spent grasses, decaying slowly as they nurture the parched soil. Flowers release their seeds and dream of spring.

Soon, I’ll return to my studio with fresh ideas for new pieces. Autumn is my best time to create—to paint, to write, and to play music.
