Collection: Heather Crout - Watercolourist

Heather Crout’s work is defined by her love of line, but always with the freedom of escaping outside that line and allowing freedom to explore the fluidity and transparency of the watercolour built on top.

One of the founding members of Art 1274 Hollis, Heather has always been interested in art. Growing up on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, she was always experimenting with various media attending any workshops when available.  Mostly self-taught, she has worked with watercolour, acrylics, collage, and printmaking on her antique press for the past 40 years.  Working to perfect her skills through experimentation and patience, she has developed her own impressionistic style inspired by light, shadows, contrast, and painting outside where she can peacefully work from life to enable her to fully explore and translate her surroundings through her paintings.

Heather Crout’s studio overlooks the ocean with its ever-changing moods and colours. She captures what may be gone tomorrow, as was the case with her paintings of Trouty, on the Bonavista Peninsula in Newfoundland, which was later devastated by Hurricane Igor in 2010.  Planning in her sketchbook with pencil, charcoal, or ink, she looks for the element of the design and then paints to capture the essence of what she sees.  When not working on her art, she can be found exploring Nova Scotia on her recently acquired motorcycle giving her a new perspective on our province.
