Grammies Spools (34" x 27")

Grammies Spools by Heather Crout combines a plexi print on her handmade paper with collage pieces sewn together, paying homage to her Grammie’s quilt-making.

Artist’s words:

“A collection of my Grammie’s spools inspired this piece. I carved their shapes into the plexi, inked it, and ran it through my antique linen press onto my handmade paper.

I lived with my Grammie at the age of 14, as she needed looking after. I would watch her try to sew patches, embroider, or just sew. She had old aprons, old house dresses, old blankets: any scrap she tried to make into a quilt, while I did my homework at the old dining room table covered with oilcloth.

After my homework, we would play cards and have a few giggles as she taught me.

The sewn pieces of paper pay homage to my Grammie’s attempt at making a quilt.”
