Weathered Together (24" x 18")

"Weathered Together" was inspired by a cluster of old, weathered buoys Colleen saw tied together and hanging at a dear friend's summer home along the coast. These buoys, collected over time, carry with them many seaside tales and histories, as if they could speak of the experiences they've endured. Although retired from their original use, they remain gathered and displayed as a beautiful seaside treasure.

Through this painting, Colleen aims to convey themes of resilience, memory, and the passage of time. The buoys are weathered and worn, yet they still hold vibrant patches of color, symbolizing the enduring beauty and stories found in objects that may seem forgotten. The title, Weathered Together, reflects their collective survival through the test of time — tied not only physically but also through shared histories and connections.

The encaustic technique was employed to add depth and richness to the painting. The texture of the wax enhances the tactile quality of the weathered surfaces, emphasizing the physicality and layered stories of the buoys. The process allowed Colleen to discover new aspects of her subject, noticing how the old and worn elements coexist with lively color and texture.

She hopes viewers feel a recognition of beauty and history in objects that might otherwise be overlooked — understanding that these items, though weathered, hold value and meaning beyond their practical use.
